Three Days In Agadir — Between Family, Argan, And Healing
In mid-November, when winter in Belgium had already begun to tighten its grip around my throat, I decided to escape to Agadir for three days. A short trip, but exactly what I needed: sun on my skin, warmth in my heart, and a visit to our argan cooperative. But above all… to see my grandparents again.
This journey carried extra meaning.
It was Meya’s first time in Morocco. My daughter felt at home instantly. She ran, laughed, lived — as if the space and warmth had given her wings. I allowed her more freedom there than I might here. There is something about Morocco that lets children breathe more freely.
And then there was my grandmother.
The woman who shaped my childhood with her gentle hands and strong words. For the first time, she met Meya — her great-granddaughter. And just as I expected, she was completely taken by her, utterly in love from the first moment.
The evening before I returned to Belgium, she knocked on my door. She wanted to speak to me — just the two of us.
She told me I must always keep Meya close, never give her to anyone. Her voice trembled slightly, as if every sentence was caught between love and fear.
My grandmother’s past lingers around her like a whisper. She was orphaned at a young age — losing both her mother and father to tragic accidents. That emptiness shaped her, making her fiercely protective of her daughter (my mother), of me, and now of Meya.
I took her hands and gently told her not to worry.
That the past does not have to define the present.
That wounds can heal when generations are willing to do the work together.
That love — not fear — should guide our future.
And as she nodded, I saw a quiet piece of peace return to her eyes.
Three days in Agadir.
Sun, family, argan… but above all: being reminded of where we come from, in order to understand where we want to go.
A short journey — but one that connected three generations: my grandmother, myself, and Meya.
And that is something I will carry with me forever.
